I don't have anything long for today, we're a little busy. Today's my dad's birthday (he's turning 43!) The Hoffmans and Quillas are coming over for dessert to celebrate. Actually, it was supposed to be a surprise, but me and my big mouth...yep, I spilled it.
Okay - anyway - this is one of my favorite quotes from Joshua Chamberlain, one of my favorite Civil War heros, who basically won the battle of Gettysburg for the Union. I think it really captures what took place there.
"In great deeds something abides. On great fields something stays. Forms change and pass; bodies disappear; but spirits linger, to concecrate the ground for the visionplace of souls. And reverent men and women from afar, and generations who know us not and we know not of, heartdrawn to see where and by whom great things were suffered and done for them, shall come to this deathless field, to ponder and dream, and lo! The shadow of a might presence shall wrap them in its bosom, and the power of the vision pass into their souls."
~ Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, former colonel of the 20th Maine Infantry
Gettysburg battlefiled, October 3, 1889
