Vacation `08: Colonial Williamsburg

Our first stop was Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. They have basically recreated the town the way it would have operated in 1776: cobblestone streets, little white frame houses, taverns, blacksmith shops, apothecarys, millinery shops, mercantiles, etc. Men in tricorn hats and knickers. Women in mobcaps. Horse drawn carriages. Some of the original buildings have been restored, too, like the Governer's Palace, the Courthouse, and the Magazine. I was basically giddy the entire time. We even got to eat in a couple of the historic taverns. We ate things like pickled watermelon, peanut soup, duck sausage, and syllabub. It was all surprisingly good.

Anyway, I took hundreds of pictures (yes, in Williamsburg alone,) and here are a few of them:

We stopped in this cute little bake shop and got ginger cakes and root beer. It was pretty much incredible.

Two of my favorite things in Williamsburg: the iron gates and lanterns. Don't ask me why. I just fell in love with them. Consequently, I have many pictures devoted to them which I have refrained from posting here.

The woodwork in the Governer's Palace was gorgeous. I wish this picture did it justice.
