A Short Story, by...my brother

Bunny Maimer of New York!

Its year 2200 in New York; the buildings reach for the sky, the smog is thick, and the most dangerous criminal is on the loose! The most feared is Bunny Maimer. He reaches heights of 7 feet tall, has a long narrow face, broad shoulders, and is rather bulky, muscular and well built. He clothes himself in a black trench coat, fedora and size 14 black boots. He doesn’t need a weapon; he only has his intense strength which he obtained in a catastrophic fail in a science experiment his mad father was running when Bunny Maimer was only in the 3rd grade.

Rumors raid the streets of Bunny Maimer’s obsession. Tails are told of him having some early tragic childhood experience while others are spread of him just being plain crazy. But no matter what the truth might be, it’s the END if you are caught roaming the streets with a bunny! (dun…Dun…DUN!)

Ever since, well, whatever happened to Bunny Maimer happened, rabbits have been quite scarce and haven’t been seen for a good 15 years now. But as rumors spread like they do in the big cities, Bunny Maimer gets a tip that a lone rabbit has been spotted in New York! He investigates to see where the bunny is, and finds out that it’s being held in protective custody by the armed forces of the city high up in the main building.

Bunny Maimer realizes he can’t make this great capture alone so he seeks assistance from his little brother Gary. Gary sports attire that’s the height of fashion for 2200. He wears a loose polo shirt, an iron helmet, glittery spandex pants and high leather boots and has a slouch like a monkey. Gary is a scientist just like the two men’s father was which is why Bunny Maimer thinks their father loved Gary more. The lie Bunny Maimer has been telling himself, that his father loved his younger brother more, is also the reason the brothers haven’t seen each other in a good ten years. Once Gary gets a phone call from his older brother he pounces on the opportunity to help and hopefully be reunited with his older brother.

Gary takes the easiest way to get to his brother, the speedy train. The train docks, to drop off its passengers. Gary faces downwards, closes his eyes and takes a big deep breath right before the doors open. The nasty, sneezed upon, finger smudged doors slide apart and the brothers make eye contact. Gary, sobbing audibly, cries out, overwhelmed with emotion and runs to embrace with open arms his brother so long estranged from him. Bunny Maimer views the reunion only as a business opportunity come his way, and nothing more at all. Gary swims in the warmth of hugging his long lost brother. Bunny Maimer, arms hanging limply at his side, glances around at others passing by in embarrassment. He is completely unmoved by his brother’s fanatical overreaction. “Ok Gary that’s enough.” he mutters with a hint of irritation. “I’m sorry!” Gary gulps. “It’s just been so long!” He yells, spitting on his brothers face by accident. “Ok, well, it’s all good and dandy now. Let’s go get a couple of nice frosty refreshing over-priced Schlitz beers, and chill in my nasty stuffy under –priced apartment till it’s time for the, you know what,” he says, with a wink, glancing over his shoulder apprehensively. “Okey dokey!” Gary replies with the dorkiest wink anyone could possibly imagine, and they head off to Bunny Maimer’s simple domicile, a humble apartment. They step on to a spinning spiral, the current means of teleportation which replaced the outmoded elevator, and Bunny Maimer says, “room 1542 please.” They teleport up to his room to hang loose and drink some beer. While they wait for darkness to settle upon the city, Gary is busy fiddling like a squirrel with a nut, with his new toy. “What in the world is that?” Bunny Maimer asks with a puzzled look on his face. “It’s something I whipped up on the way over here. It’s designed to rip through the outer wall of the computer in the building and disarm the security system!” Gary exclaims with glee and a swig of beer.

Darkness blankets the city of New York like the Loch Ness Monster over her nest in the midst of a foggy morning, and the men exit the building. They face the towering building from about 3 blocks away and observe the security with their futuristic glasses. The guards are well armored and armed with light weight metal plates for protection, and laser cannons to fend off any unruly intruders that they have been waiting and training for. They form a human wall around the building. A bead of sweat falls from Gary’s forehead but Bunny Maimer doesn’t worry about the guards because he knows what he is capable of. They spot the door that will lead to the computer on the North West side of the building and head for it. The patrol leader of the guards shouts out at the two men, “Halt! This is a restricted area! Turn back home and go kiss your ugly manly wife!” Gary looks at Bunny Maimer and spits in his hand with cheeks inflated, failing to hold back his laugh. “How about you go back home to your hideous obese mother!” Bunny Maimer screams out.

The head guard replies in utter shock, ”Well your Mama is so stupid, she sold her car for gas money!”

Bunny Maimer cries out in defense, “Well yo Mama is so fat, the last time she saw a phone number was on the bathroom scale!”

The guard turns back to his squadron saying, “I’ve had enough of this fool! Shoot him!” Then under his breath mutters, “The truth is too painful.”

The mass of guards, perfectly in-sync, grab their guns from their backs and begin to rain a hail of fire upon Bunny Maimer and Gary. Somehow or another, they don’t manage to get a single shot on either of them. Shocked, Bunny Maimer and Gary just stroll to the door throwing a punch here and there to the worthless guards. Gary tries to kick down the door, but fails of course. Blushing, Gary backs off for Bunny Maimer to beat down the door. In one well aimed blow, the door comes heaving down. More worthless guards come from the inside of the building and they also fail in shooting the men for whatever reason. Gary leads the way to the main computer to shut it down so all the frustrating doors and other defenses will be dealt with. A “swooshing” sound tickles their ears as they hear the doors all slide up. They start their mind rotting climb. “Dude I need a candy bar!” Gary shouts right as they make it to the 130th floor as he gazes at the vending machine. “Ok fine, but make it quick!” Bunny Maimer shouts in disgust of his brother. Gary takes a buck from one of the dead guards and gets a Butterfinger. They resume their hike up to the bunny with minimal bathroom stops. Once they reach the very top floor they encounter, what seems to be, the head of all the armed forces. He is a 200lb beast with biceps the size of tires! With a mighty chuckle the beast exclaims, “You fools! The rabbit will remain untouched by your filthy hands!”

Gary walks up ever so casually with his hands held behind his back and simply breaks one of the beer bottles that he previously drank over the over sized man’s head, and he comes down – arising dust as he hits the ground. “Good job Gary.” Bunny Maimer says with a smirk. They spot the bunny in a glass cage. Busting through the thick glass, Bunny Maimer wraps his big meaty fingers around the rabbit’s neck but doesn’t apply pressure because his brother calls out, “Brother! Think about what you’re about to do! Will you wipe out the entire race of rabbits due to a random obsession? I just want my old brother back and us to have good times again! Please just let it go!”

Bunny Maimer looks into the soft eyes of the rabbit and a tear falls from his cheek. “You’re right brother, this is pointless, it must end!” More guards make their way up to the scene and Bunny Maimer and Gary turn themselves in. As Bunny Maimer and Gary are being led to the transport they are about to be hauled into, cheers arise from the crowd that gathered while the men were in the building, and Bunny Maimer looks down at the ground, ashamed. The two brothers do their time in the high-tec prison. They get out after 10 long gruesome years. Once they get out they move to Greenland and start a rabbit farm, to enjoy each other’s company, breeding rabbits, and a couple of nice, chilled, frosty, over-priced Schlitz beers.

The Shakespearian Insult Kit XD

Yes folks, you heard me right. In honor of our literature class with the lovely Mrs. Altstadt, and her mention of the "Shakespeare Insult Dictionary", I was compelled to Google it. And came up with this. So, without further ado...

Description

This is it.
The massive, oaken double doors are the only things that stand between you and what will be heralded as the most spectacular ball of the season, hosted by the Queen of England herself.
You take a deep breath and, despite the nervous butterflies in your stomach, place your hands on the doors and heave them open.
Your senses begin to tingle at the dizzying spectacle before you. Everything on the other side of the doors is completely forgotten as you are swept into the hectic grandeur of the ballroom. Brightly colored satin skirts whirl across the dance floor, led by gentlemen in impressively large powdered wigs. The tinkling of crystal stemware, bursts of laughter, and the cadenced stomping of feet on the dance floor buzzes in your ears till you hardly know on what to focus. The romping rhythm of the fiddles pulses through you, igniting a rush of adrenaline until you can hardly force your limbs to be still. To the right of you, you observe a beautiful lady, in yellow silk with pink rosettes, offer her delicately gloved hand to a gentleman to be kissed. The gentleman, handsome and distinguished in his silken cravat and mulberry frockcoat, murmurs something as he takes the lady’s hand, inducing a feminine burst coquettish laughter.
Tiring of this scene, you turn to survey the supper. Tables nearly the length of the room bow under the weight of ornate silver platters and roasted fowl. Firelight from the massive hearth on the east end of the room flashes off of the silverware, as guests cut greedily into the bounty. Maidservants in subdued frocks and blindingly white aprons and caps scurry back and forth; making sure no one’s wineglass is ever empty. You notice that they seem to be hovering over one particular guest, and you wish they would move so that you could get a glimpse of this individual, whoever she might be. Expecting a princess or a noblewoman in lustrous satin and over-applied rouge, the creature that invades your vision induces nothing other than shock.
She is slightly humpbacked, undoubtedly dirty, and is shrouded in a dingy, shapeless mud-colored tunic that resembles a gunnysack. It is impossible to tell her age; her vivid blue eyes are strangely full of life and seem to belie the wrinkles spider webbing across her shrunken face. As for her hair, matted and limp with grease, it could be brown, gray, or any other color in between. As she opens her mouth to shovel in a spoonful of mint pudding, you realize she has no teeth.
Lowering your gaze under the table, you confirm that her feet are not only bare, deformed and caked with grime; they are dangling some six inches above the floor.
All the well-to-do folk sitting around her converse with her just as they do with everyone else at the party. A middle-aged duchess in red silk addresses the grubby beggar. The old woman replies with animated expression, blue eyes twinkling, waving her gnarled hands about excitedly. On each of her knobby, arthritis twisted fingers flashes a huge ring, bedecked with jewels of each color of the rainbow. Her coarse, gravelly, over-loud voice rips through the pleasant hum of genteel conversation.
You watch as the gentleman in the mulberry frock-coat approaches the beggar, lowering himself onto one knee and offering a spotlessly-gloved hand. The thick calluses on the woman’s paw catch on the fine cotton material as she accepts the gentleman’s invitation to dance. The pair spins out onto the dance floor, and the grubby brown sack-cloth is soon engulfed by whirling silks and flashing lights.

Umm...

So I wrote a whole, long post last night with the intention of posting it, when my internet connection decided to fail and thus, my whole post was ditched. So! Someday soon I will get around to re-writing it, because honestly, I don't feel like it right now. And if you really have nothing better to do, go check out Mr. Smith's blog. Got some new posts up. Oh yeah.

Abby Quotable of the Day :)

With my dad being a doctor, we have always come to him with all kinds of interesting questions. Abby, espescially, likes to hear about delivering babies. Here is a little interaction we had in the car today...

Abby: "Mommy, Daddy says that some babies come out with their feet first instead of their head. Is that true?"

Mom: "Yes, it can happen. It's usually not a good thing, though."

Abby: "Oh. I see. It probably makes the baby really confused, huh?"

Oooohhh man that just totally made my day. Hope you smiled, too! :)

"Careful, Or I'll Put You In My Novel"

Edit: [yes I know my Christmas template didn't last long. we couldn't seem to get along. :( And also, check out the bottom of my page...]

If you've ever read a copyright page (and I am not saying most normal people do) you will have come across the line "any resemblance to persons living or dead unintentional." I used to think, how stupid is that? I mean, who is going to pick up a book and imagine that the author has stolen "them", as a person, for one of their characters?

Ridiculous? Maybe not. As I progress in the novel I'm writing, I've begun to realize my characters don't always behave. What I mean to say is, they don't seem to stick to who I originally imaged them. Some of the more placid ones stick to the path I've already paved for them, but many more seem to run off and take on characteristics that I certainly never planned. The more I write, the more I begin to realize, maybe my characters aren't quite as "fictional" as I thought. In fact, some particular ones seem to bear uncanny resemblances to some key people in my life. Including - uh-oh - me!

I wonder if anyone who's ever written runs into this problem? Or if it's only me. Is it better to control characters? Or to allow them to evolve a little? Maybe someday I'll have it all figured out. But for now I guess I'll just let my characters run things and see where they take me...

Ahem. Thank you for bearing with me and my seemingly-random ramblings. Sometimes I'm not really sure where they come from. All I know is I have to get it out somewhere before I go crazy.

And yes. If you are reading this, you are most likely someone, somewhere in my novel. ;)

Catching Up...

Ok! So its been a while since I've been in the blogosphere. So! First thing's first....

I've been tagged!!! By Stephie. Here's how it works:

Go to your Pictures file
Go to the 5th folder
Open the 5th picture and post it
Tag 5 people when you're done

Yes, I know. It's Picket's Charge. Not surprising, huh? :) And since Stephie already tagged Vivian I'm going to have to think really hard who to tag and I still doubt I'll come up with 5.

Okay. I guess Vivian can do it twice. :) I also tag Ben, Anna, and William. Guess that's 4. Even though nobody will do it. ;)

Now that I have that taken care of...

IT'S ALMOST CHRISTMAS!!

For some reason last year I was not really excited about Christmas. This year, I am remembering why I loved it so much when I was little. Not presents, necessarily...for the life of me I can't think of anything I want and my grandma is very aggravated with me (LOL). Seriously, though. I love the SMELL of Christmas. I have baked countless batches of gingerbread cookies already just because I like the smell. Then I end up eating them. Thankfully the doctor thinks I'm underweight so I can eat as much as I want. =D In addition to this, I love Christmas music...I'm either listening to it on the radio or playing on the piano. Christmas decorations rock...yes, I know, "shiny things." lol. And my favorite: church at Christmastime. There is just something about the combination of garland and pews and big red bows that is so old-fashioned and sweet. And out worship team is awesome with the Christmas carols. This week I think I realized for the first time, singing them, how worshipful they are! I bawled the entire worship service and ended up with a pile of soggy, make-uppy kleenexs on the pew. But seriously. God is so good! I love Mr. Hoffman's saying: "You can't separate the cradle from the cross."

Wow this is a really rambling post. I think the cold weather is getting to me...

Merry Christmas everyone! "Hallelujah, Hope has Come!"

Another Novel

Yes, I have been at work again on yet another "novel" of mine. I have many, you know, though I never have the heart to finish them. I feel rather disloyal to my characters if I finish a book. So there is no guarantee this one will be finished in 2009 like my spiffy little "trailor" says. I just made that for fun. :) But yeah, I find the fact that Robert E. Lee and George Washington were related (by marriage) fascinating. And sadly, my brain will run away with something like that and add a whole bunch of "what ifs...?" to it and voila, I start a new book. :)

So yes. This is what I have been up to lately. :)

A. Post.

I feel like I should post something.

Actually, I don't. I'm just bored and, since I was already on the internet, posting sounded like something to do.

The result of this?

NOTHINGNESS!!!

So this is what happened this week.

MONDAY: I finished - after 2 years of it being pounded into my head - Algebra 1!! I know to some of you who are like...studying Calculus...this is really lame but let me tell you...this is a victory. MAN do I stink at math and MAN am I happy to be done with Algebra. At least for this year. For now it is Geometry and then comes Algebra 2. Ick.

TUESDAY: Barak Obama is elected president. It is really tempting to go off on a tangent here but I won't because...well...why waste a nothingness post on Barak Obama? `Nuff said.

WEDNESDAY: I sat in Derek's office at church and addressed aproximately 60 Christmas cards and 4 birthday cards. (By the way if you think my room is messy you should see Derek's office. It was incredible. All I had to do was stack a few books on top of each other and he could tell I had "straightened up" for him. Wow.)

THURSDAY: Matthew has a stomach bug and thus, I have nothing to do, so I start a new novel. It has to do with Robert E. Lee's family plus the Custis/Washington family...Arlington House...and a family secret that could have possibly changed history and the outcome of the Civil War but didn't because I invented it...bwahaha....

FRIDAY: A remarkable day in history. NOTHING HAPPENED.

SATURDAY: Played the Wii for the first time in the 2 years we have had it and proved my self to be the 2nd worst player in the living room (Ben coming in 1st). Went to work and made aproximately 30 thousand milkshakes (half of them ending up on me) and listened to Joel sing "I'm dreaming of a white Thanksgiving." Goodness I love working there. :)

TODAY: Had a pretty much amazing time in the Nursery at church. It is way too much fun to be in there with Ben and those little kids. The combination is just...well...anyway. I love it. :) Then the Sharps came over after church and we ate. Alot. Of food. That was fun, too. :)

So that was my week. I have no doubt that you are all the more edified by my accound of it.

And since I can't think of any clever ways to end this post I will just say "GOODBYE."

Halloween Randomness from Mr. Smith and Co...

Reflections from the life and times of Mr. Smith. Today is Halloween. That strange holiday, celebrating strange costumes and greedy little children. The one time of year – not counting Christmas – where you can be very, very greedy. I have not decided what costume I should wear yet…any suggestions? I think I will go as the all duck-tape man, maybe wrap myself up like a mummy with duck-tape. But last time I did that I got an awful rash and I lost all my hair. A couple years ago one of my friends suggested I dress up as a globe, he said that I wouldn’t even need to use any padding. I’m not sure I like that idea. As I wandered through the streets looking at all the other children’s costumes, trying to decide what I liked, night had already fallen, and people were handing out candy to greedy little fat children. I felt compelled to write a poem. And here is my poem:
I rounded a corner and lo and behold,
I saw Old Saint Nick, trembling and old.
He stared and he glared and he grumbled at me.
He stared so long I charged him a fee.
He stopped in his tracks.
He started to scream.
The world around me shifted,
As if in a dream.
And poor old Saint Nick, he turned and he fell.
And he didn’t stop falling till he landed in hell.
The moral to this story?
Look both ways before crossing the street.
I’m not sure why, but it sounds kind of neat.

Thus ends this week’s reflections. And then my mirror image disappeared.

Reflections from the life and times of Mr. Smith.
After Saint Nick expired, I realized that,
I, as myself,
In all of my fat
Am nearly as evil
As an evil dark bat.
Demons and goblins can’t stand up to me
As I walked down the street,
I saw they could see.
They dropped left and right
They fell before me.
They saw Smith at his best.
Standing there only in a plaid striped vest.

Thus ends this week's reflections. And then my mirror image disappeared.
Just as a side note, we don't really celebrate halloween. We are just amused by the ridiculousness of it. :) And yes, Ben is now a professional poet. We're totally going to be published someday. Soon his name will be up there with Edgar Allan Poe and John Greenleaf Whittier...
Okay. It's way too late for me to be posting so I'm going to exit before I say anything I'll regret in the morning...

End of a Long Week...:)

Oh man, I don't think I was ever so happy to see any one as I was to see my parents today after being in Hawaii for a week. In case you all have stopped breathing at the idea of me staying with the other kids...breathe. My grandma was here - she was very brave and a true blessing from God. But that doesn't necessarily mean the week was completely uneventful...

Well, the first part was, at least. I cooked, but needless to say, we still went to McDonalds quite a bit...lol.

But then on Friday, the toilet overflowed.

And then, on Saturday morning we had a little visit from the fire department. (A direct result of my "cooking".) It seems I can't even fry an egg without it resulting in disaster. The dumb thing wouldn't quit smoking. I'm sure our neighbors were very reassured to see the giant red fire truck parked in our driveway.

After that, we went to Taco Bell for lunch. :) And then we came home. And came to realize we were locked out. :)

That being established, we went over to the H's to see if they had a key (which they didn't...only our garage code...). They did have a phone book, however, and we were able to get a hold of a lock smith - aparently the only one who was working that weekend. So we hung around at their house for about an hour until the guy could get there and break us back into our house. He declared our door to be "unusually hard" to get open. Hmm. Imagine that.

But we did, eventually, get inside and I was able to grab a bite before going to work. Julianna and I convinced ourselves there would surely be a stick-up that evening at Chick-fil-A, knowing our luck that past week. :) We also contemplated warning the manager, but nothing ever happened. :) The worst that happened was that I - with the help of my world-renowned kitchen-skills - made a huge mess making a milkshake. But yeah. No stick-ups. :)

I have decided to write a a book entitled - "HOW NOT TO COOK." It does have a certain ring to it.

Anyway! My parents - my beloved parents - are back; bringing sanity and peace to our household.

And thus ends my rambling account of the weekend. ;)

After Long Last

Mr. Smith returns! So sorry for not posting these for so long...I admit I kind of forgot about it. *gasp* Hopefully we'll also be writing new ones in the near future...hee hee. :)

Reflections from the life and times of Mr. Smith. The city is not for me. I visited it too many times. I long for the country. I long for freedom. So I went to the country. I went to freedom. I discovered the only thing about life on a farm that is free is my labor. Those nincompoops actually expect me to work for free and expect me to enjoy it. Life on the farm is not for me either. I must try life on the moon sometime. In fact, sitting is what I do best. After I got back to my home in the suburbs, I decided to paint my fence to match my house. Except, I would make white with orange polka dots. My neighbors got up in arms. I felt compelled to tear down my fence and move it back a foot. Suddenly I realized, my yard was smaller. Who would have thought it. I obviously wouldn’t of, or I wouldn’t have done it. My neighbors obviously did, for they made me do it. I decided…my roof was rather colorless. In fact…what is the purpose for a roof? I sat and pondered this for quite some time…reflecting on the reflections…the vibrations…as trucks passed me on the freeway. And I realized, the freeway is not a good place to sit and reflect. One could easily be killed. No wonder my neighbors suggested it. It makes me miss Mr. Jones. (See above x?) He was a good neighbor.
Thus ends this week’s reflections. And then my mirror image disappeared.

Reflections from the life and times of Mr. Smith. Emotions…are so emotional. Why do we have emotions? I pause, and I wonder. Then I reflected. And I reflected some more. Then I felt compelled to become a hippie, and spread the loooooooove. So I grew my hair really long. This took only a few days, because I used hair tonic. That stuff works miracles. Then I bought some groovy clothes. And I went outside, ready to spread the love. But, mysteriously, everyone had disappeared for the day. If I didn’t know better, I’d say they were hiding. Good thing I know better. They were all going to throw me a surprise birthday party. Everyone in town. I hope they know what I like. A big cake and lots of presents. I hope I get a motor scooter. On the day of my birthday, I walked in my house, expecting to be surprised. Fortunately, I wasn’t disappointed. My neighbor’s cat was dead, in my house. Fortunately that was not the only surprise that day. They did throw me a birthday party. Threw it in my window. Poor cake got glass in it. Maybe they don’t like me so much. Naw…I’m such a nice guy. I just love to spread the love.
Thus ends this week’s reflections. And then my mirror image disappeared.

Stay tuned for the next installation in this thrilling series...
LOL. :)

God Is Good =)

Well, the Lord certainly works in mysterious ways.

His grace is ever present - up to the point of giving us gifts, even when we've really blown it and definitely don't deserve them.

Okay, OH MY GOODNESS!! I GOT THE JOB AT CHICK-FIL-A AFTER ALL!!

Yeah, so, I'm pretty excited. =D Definately wasn't expecting this a whole month after I interviewed...but yeah. Got a call the other day while I was making dinner with my mom, and they're like, "we have a position for you if you're still interested...can you come in on Monday to sign some papers?"

Still interested? OH YEAH! Instead I said (very calmly) "why yes, as a matter of fact I am. How does 2:30 sound?"

And that was it.

I have this image of the lumberjack from the animated movie, Hoodwinked, saying: "I got a call back!" LOL

On Saturday, I'm going in to watch some prep. videos (they say they're quite cheesy but oh well) and then I'm going to shadow some one during the lunch hour (which can be impossibly busy, so keep me in your prayers! lol). Yeah, so, please nobody I know come in on Saturday afternoon!

Anyway, this is even more exciting for me thinking about the Mexico missions trip next summer. So 6 bucks an hour isn't very much, but I am SO EXCITED to think that I'll actually be able to contribute to that a little! Money that I actually earned to help care for people and further the gospel...maybe that sounds dumb but oh well. I'm really happy about it. =)

The End.
:)

Aaaahhhh!!

THE SUN CAME OUT!!
HAPPINESS!!
